Also inside DNS, there is an identification of domains with their mail servers, or rather, the identification of MX records with domain names. DNS allows us to contact him with the domain name and get a list of all MX records of this domain. Now let's take a closer look at the process of sending an email. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is used to send an email. Let's look at how SMTP works. The first action performed by any email server to send email to another email server is the connection - Connect. Actually, this is not a protocol command; it creates a communication channel for the subsequent dispatch of commands. The first command sent is HELO. This command is sent to open a dialogue between two servers. When receiving a positive response from the destination server, the process will continue. The following command MAIL FROM includes the sender address parameter. It informs the destination server about the sender's address. If the sender receives a positive response, the dialogue continues. The next command RCPT TO is sent with the parameter "recipient address". If the answer to this command is positive, the process of sending the mail will continue. Next, the sender's server will send the body of the email itself and the documents attached to it, but for our purpose, the completion of this process is not important. Moreover, we need to interrupt the process using the QUIT command to prevent sending the email actually, since we are interested in verification of an email address, and not in sending an email to this address.

Why VERIFY Does Not Work

I just want to notice that there is a VERIFY command in the SMTP protocol itself; this command was intended to respond to the request about email existence. But, unfortunately, due to the overuse of this command by spammers, today there are practically no servers that will respond truly to this command.

What can be done in this situation? Let's take a closer look at what happens when sending the RCPT TO command. We inform the requested server by this command to which email address we want to send an email. The e-mail address specified in RCPT TO must exist on this server in order the requested server could do this. If this address does not exist, many email servers will return the error "550" to us, which in fact means that they do not have this email address. Actually, this will be the answer to our question whether the given email address exists. But, unfortunately, many servers do not return this error but return a positive response "250", indicating that the request has been accepted. There are also several other responses to the RCPT TO command from the server. For example, we can receive a response that the given email address is full and cannot receive an email at the moment; this corresponds with the "552" code received from the requested server. Another example is "450", which means that this specific email address is not available at this stage, which, in fact, can only be a temporary error and does not mean that the given address does not exist at all. Many other negative responses from the requested server are also possible. It makes sense to consider each of the possible responses of the requested server to decide whether or not an email address exists. Also, your decision may vary depending on your goals. For example, if we return to the answer "the email address is full" - the code "552". If the purpose of your verification is to determine whether the address exists, this answer unequivocally says that the address exists; but if the purpose of your verification is to decide whether to send mail to this e-mail address or not, in the case of such reply (stating that the email address is overfilled), there is no point in sending a mail.

Summarizing the above. In the case of a "550" negative answer to the RCPT TO command, as well as any other additional answers which we will choose as negative for ourselves, we can decide that this email address does not exist. In the case of positive response "250," there is no absolute certainty that the address we are interested in exists.
